Howdy!

No, I’m kidding.  We don’t really say that.  Well, I don’t say that.  Okay, yeah, I’ve said it.  Ironically?  Anyway, Mud County Rodeo.  It’s a comic.  About two guys who are basically us.  Chase found this after we were about seven comics in.  It’s almost like we read every guideline beforehand and decided to do the opposite.  Eh, fuck it.

There’s no denying that we’re both big fans of Penny Arcade.  Chase reads some other mainstream stuff.  PvP, VGCats, I don’t know what else.  Still, when it came down to choosing between doing what we wanted to do or doing something we didn’t want to do just because Penny Arcade does something similar, you can see what we chose.  We love Penny Arcade.  I think that’s obvious.  But we don’t want to be Penny Arcade.  I think there’s room for more than one comic about two guys doing stuff.

“Are you serious?  Do you know how many comics there are with that exact same idea?”

I am unaware. Please, enlighten me.

“Will it always be about rodeos?”

Nah.  In fact, you might never see a rodeo again.  We just liked the name “Mud County Rodeo”.  It’s evocative of what we want to do and who we are.  With this first comic we wanted it to be something that was unmistakably us.  We wanted you to know what you were getting into straight out the gate.  (Get it?)

You might be able to tell from looking around that this site is still a work in progress.  There’s nothing in the store, the donate button doesn’t work, the ads are blank.  (I know you’re looking forward to those ads…)  We’re working on it!  Give us a little time and we’ll have this place cleaned up nice for ya.

Welcome to Mud County Rodeo.

Like he said, we’re still working on this place.  We want to make it great.  We want you to like spending time with us.  We want it to be yours.  We are here to serve.

You can probably see Penny Arcade‘s influence on my work.  I learn new things from Mike every day.  Indirectly, of course.  I also learn from other artists, but Mike’s work is my favorite and I hope it shows.  This whole thing is new to me.  I’ve never drawn comics before Mud County Rodeo.  I went to art school, but I have no animation training.  “Draw from life!” they said.  And we did.  Abstraction as it pertains to comics is something entirely different, but I’m loving it.  More than I’ve loved any other skill I’ve worked at.

That’s why I want you to be happy here.  Through you I can continue doing what I love and sharing my creations with people who appreciate them.  Thank you for coming here today and for checking out the comic.  We know there are other comics out there.  Our hope is that maybe next time after you finish reading Penny Arcade and you’re looking for another quick fix to kill some time, you’ll come back and check us out again.  We’ll be here.

One last thing, I need to thank my friend Daniel for getting this site running for us.  I worked with Daniel at my last job and he was the first person I thought of when I realized that coding for this website was going to be over my head.  Daniel’s one of the nicest guys I know and he’s never hesitated to help me out when I needed him.  The most I’ve ever done for him, I think, is spill his coffee the first time we met.  He’s a great friend and I don’t deserve him.  Thanks for everything, Daniel.
